The Origin Story
The journey of the Shamrock Shake began in 1967, when Hal Rosen, a McDonald’s Owner/Operator in Connecticut, created the iconic mint-flavored shake to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
What started as a seasonal treat quickly captured the hearts of customers, leading to its introduction in select McDonald’s locations nationwide by 1970. This simple yet delightful shake became an instant favorite, and its popularity only grew over time, evolving into a beloved tradition that’s still enjoyed today.
Making an Impact
In 1974, sales of the Shamrock Shake helped fund the establishment of the very first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. The initiative began when the daughter of a Philadelphia Eagles player was being treated for leukemia. In partnership with Hal Rosen, McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Eagles, the family raised enough funds through Shamrock Shake sales to create a place where families could stay close to their children during difficult times. Today, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) supports millions of families worldwide, with nearly 390+ houses in 60+ countries and regions.
Helping Families One Shake at a Time
This year, McDonald’s brought back the beloved Shamrock Shake as a fundraiser for RMHC for the first time since 2017. Twenty-five cents from every shake benefit local Ronald McDonald House Charities organizations. “The funds raised will directly support families in need of comfort and care at the Ronald McDonald House Charities New York Metro and surrounding houses in the region,” said Cassandra Basile, Director of Marketing at RMHC New York Metro.
McDonald’s Culture of Giving Back
The Shamrock Shake is one of many ways McDonald’s restaurants give back. Round Up for RMHC is a popular and important way customers can support sick children and families in their communities just by purchasing food at their local restaurant. Through Round Up for RMHC, thousands of families are supported every year in the New York Metro region.
